First of all, I definitely don’t believe that the staff member who posted the caption is consciously racist, but I definitely do think they are ignorant.
I love Elle Canada magazine, and was definitely disappointed in the decission of a member to upload a photograph of Beyonce with the caption “Is Beyonce the hottest baby momma out there? We say yes! Would you agree?”
I have never seen Katie Holmes, Angelina Jolie, or any other pregnant Caucasian female referred to as a “Baby Momma”, so I was incredibly pissed off at the amount of pure ignorance that the magazine keeps in their office.
Beyonce is in no way shape or form a “Baby Momma”, as a “Baby Momma” is a woman that has a child out of wedlock, and usually to a man as the result of a one night stand.
Why couldn’t they call her a beautiful mommy to be like they do for women of other races?
In an attempt to cover their ass, Elle first released the following statement:
Thanks for your feedback but in no way were we aiming to be racist by calling a pregnant woman (regardless of colour) a hot “baby mamma.” It’s a slang term that isn’t defined as a “ghetto slang term” and it’s not at all intended to imply anything racial of the sort. She’s a mom-in-waiting, hence “momma” and she has a baby growing in her belly, hence “baby momma.” (We accidentally spelled the word “momma” as “mamma.”) It was meant to be casual, cute, not at all offensive.
No apology or promise to change it seeing as it’s offensive.
After more backlash from Facebook fans, the magazine finally decided to suck it up and offer another attempt at an apology.
To everyone we’ve offended with using such a term, we apologize. We didn’t realize it had any negative, nor racial connotation otherwise we most certainly wouldn’t have used it. We appreciate your comments and will refrain from using this terminology, or any derivative of it, in future posts. Regards, Lara.
Interesting how after the bullshit sincere apology from Lara, the only editing Elle Canda did on the caption was change the “O” in Baby Momma to “A” for Baby Mama. You know, because it’s more politically correct and all.
UPDATE: Elle Canada releases another apology. This time directly to 613style
In response to 613Style.com’s post on our Facebook page, we would like to genuinely apologize for any offense we may have caused in our Beyonce post. In truth, we never intended to use words that had any remote racial connotation to them and we are sorry to anyone who thought us using such phraseology was an insult and a derogatory term. We refrained from deleting the post as we didn’t want to censor our followers opinions and thoughts on the matter. We didn’t intentionally keep the post live on our site for malicious reasons. To all we’ve offended, please accept our sincere apologies. Lara

I am more offended by your “Free Shit” blog posting than by “Baby Momma”, but I guess this just goes to show us all that we need to be sensitive to each other.
so is it racist when Jay Z uses the word N***A in every other sentence in every single song he sings?? Give me a break…for all you know Lara from Elle Canada is black. Y
Makes total sense Peter, I can tell you went to Harvard
@NotSoSensitive . . . yes, I do think what Jay-Z does is ignorant as well. Hence the reason I don’t listen to him.
It’s so sad to see people who wouldn’t understand the effect harmful words can have because they’re on the opposite end of them lash out because you are taking a stand. It’s really a shame.
I agree. I mean if it didn’t offend you, okay cool story. Leave it and walk on. But to get mad because people were offended? LAME.
I concur with the author on the racial connotations of “Baby Momma”, but more than that, applaud the initiative to speak up and point out an issue to a prominent magazine. It’s not easy, it’s never well-received and often generates a severe amount of backlash. However, this case clearly has well done research and I applaud that. Furthermore, this is not the first time media has been called to task on this issue: http://www.foxnews.com/wires/2008Jun12/0,4670,TVFoxObama,00.html
Finally, I further applaud the author for following up on the comments she made and not relenting at a wishy-washy apology
Thank you! There’s no excuse for it.
