Thann always knows how to show Ottawa a good time, and their first ever EPIC CHRISTMAS PARTY was a huge hit! So many interesting people were in attendance that I got the lovely pleasure of meeting. Miss 20 York Street planned the huge soiree and looked dazzling while entertaining the crowd for the night. She is one great hostess, that’s for sure!

There were a lot of newcomers  to the fashion scene, which was very refreshing, as it’s always great to have fresh blood more people to network with.

With winter being kind of here, but not really, it’s the last week to sneak in a few maxi dresses without looking crazy. There’s an eco-friendly jewelry line in the 613 called Nia Kaia.  When the line’s designer, Leah Clement, decided to turn her passion for designing jewelry into a business, she knew she faced a tough market. “It seemed like everyone was making jewelry, especially here in Ottawa. I knew I had to find a way to set my work apart.”

Nia Kaia began as a way for Leah to feel good about her business, and to help give the immigrant women she met while teaching arts and crafts courses for clients of Immigrant Women Services of Ottawa, a way to create the lives they came to Canada to live. “It was a feel good thing to me. It felt good to my soul.”

Nia Kaia’s full line will be launching on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 from 7:00-9:00pm, and all are welcome. First of all, I definitely don’t believe that the staff member who posted the caption is consciously racist, but I definitely do think they are ignorant.

I love Elle Canada magazine, and was definitely disappointed in the decission of a member to upload a photograph of Beyonce with the caption “Is Beyonce the hottest baby momma out there? We say yes! Would you agree?”

I have never seen Katie Holmes, Angelina Jolie, or any other pregnant Caucasian female referred to as a “Baby Momma”, so I was incredibly pissed off at the amount of pure ignorance that the magazine keeps in their office.

Beyonce is in no way shape or form a “Baby Momma”, as a “Baby Momma” is a woman that has a child out of wedlock, and usually to a man as the result of a one night stand.

Why couldn’t they call her a beautiful mommy to be like they do for women of other races?

In an attempt to cover their ass, Elle first released the following statement:

Thanks for your feedback but in no way were we aiming to be racist by calling a pregnant woman (regardless of colour) a hot “baby mamma.” It’s a slang term that isn’t defined as a “ghetto slang term” and it’s not at all intended to imply anything racial of the sort. She’s a mom-in-waiting, hence “momma” and she has a baby growing in her belly, hence “baby momma.” (We accidentally spelled the word “momma” as “mamma.”) It was meant to be casual, cute, not at all offensive.

 

No apology or promise to change it seeing as it’s offensive.

After more backlash from Facebook fans, the magazine finally decided to suck it up and offer another attempt at an apology.

To everyone we’ve offended with using such a term, we apologize. We didn’t realize it had any negative, nor racial connotation otherwise we most certainly wouldn’t have used it. Interesting how after the bullshit   sincere apology from Lara, the only editing Elle Canda did on the caption was change the “O” in Baby Momma to “A” for Baby Mama. You know, because it’s more politically correct and all.

In truth, we never intended to use words that had any remote racial connotation to them and we are sorry to anyone who thought us using such phraseology was an insult and a derogatory term. Last week, HITS Daily Double predicted that Rihanna’s newest album ‘Talk That Talk’ would sell between 180,000 and 200,000 copies in its first week, and unfortunately for Riri, they were right.

While her boytoy friend Drake’s ‘Take Care’ album pushed a staggering 700,000 copies in its first week, ‘Talk That Talk’ limped behind with a mere 197,000 copies.

Despite the constant buzz around Rihanna, she has been having a lot of trouble dropping a #1 album, even with the success of her singles. It is also concerning that she is having trouble filling concert seats. Seems like her life is more entertaining to people than her music.

Does anyone hear that? That’s the sound of Rihanna Navy sinking.
